After Murdering His Girlfriend, Man Says He Had To Kill Her Kids Too. But What He Did To Her Little Girl Proves He Had Even More Sinister Motives
A Maine man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his girlfriend and her two children in 2014.
According to PEOPLE, 29-year-old Keith Coleman has been sentenced after being found guilty in November of murdering his 36-year-old girlfriend, Christina Sargent, her 10-year-old son, Duwayne Coke, and her 8-year-old daughter, Destiny Sargent.
Court records show that Coleman was also convicted of an additional charge for sexually assaulting the 8-year-old girl.
At the Penobscot Judicial Center in Bangor, Superior Court Justice Ann Murray called the murders “callous, cold and calculated.”
Before being sentenced, Coleman reportedly told the judge, “I hope you have mercy on me,” according to WLBZ2.
“Life is the only appropriate sentence,” Justice Murray reportedly said during the sentencing.
The chilling ordeal began on December 20, 2014, when Coleman strangled Sargent to death inside the trailer where they lived in Garland.
According to WABI TV, after strangling Sargent, Coleman felt like he had to kill her two children as well, since they were witnesses to their mother’s murder.
During the trial, jurors watched the four-hour interview between Coleman and detectives with Maine State Police in which he confessed to the triple homicide.
“I did it,” Coleman said in the video, according to Bangor Daily News. “I did it. I don’t want to say that word, but…I did it. I killed my girl.”
When one of the detectives asked Coleman about the person he killed, he reportedly replied, Chrissie and the kids.”
Both Coleman’s DNA and semen were found at the crime scene, Assistant Attorney General Leane Zainea said in her closing arguments.
Defense attorney Logan Perkins said he would be appealing the case to the state supreme court.
